AGENDA

 

Objectives

 

The objectives of this workshop are to:

 

1. Deepen participants’ knowledge and skills to implement HIV prevention strategies by drawing on products and tools developed as part of the Caribbean Education Sector HIV/AIDS Capacity Building Programme in policy development, NGO service delivery in schools, delivering HIV and AIDS services within existing youth centres, and replicating a peer-to-peer programme for college students to mentor youth in and out of school on HIV and AIDS and life skills.  

 

2.  Strengthen in-country partnerships between the Education Sector HIV Coordinators and the National AIDS Coordinating Committees.

 

3.  Strengthen in-country partnerships between the Education Sector HIV Coordinators and the Caribbean Network of People Living with HIV and AIDS.

 

4.  Share experiences and “best practices” on a variety of topics including: a) GIPA and Education, b) HIV in the context of HFLE, c) Voluntary Counselling and Testing, and d) Reducing stigma and discrimination.

 

5.  Share information, experiences and challenges relating to the role and responsibilities of the Education Sector HIV Coordinator or focal point person at an Education Sector HIV Coordinator Network meeting, and identify an action agenda for the Network Secretariat to support over the next six to twelve months (Education Sector HIV Coordinators or focal point persons only).

                        Working in country teams, participants will assess their national HIV and AIDS response in view of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and challenges to cooperation based on organisational priorities.

An update on the effects of the epidemic in the region over the last 12 months will be presented.

Discuss quality control measures, monitoring and evaluation indicators, and contracting procedures for NGO service delivery in schools. Belize will share their “lessons learnt”.

Outcomes

 

For Education Sector HIV Coordinators:

 

1.  Every country that does not have an HIV education sector policy will have developed a plan

     estimating how long and what it will take to formulate such a policy.

 

2.   Education Sector HIV Coordinators will have identified specific ways to implement one or two of the interventions and tools presented in this workshop.

 

3.  Education Sector HIV Coordinators will have identified three strategies for strengthening in-country partnerships with the National AIDS Coordinating bodies and how the Education Sector HIV Coordinator Network Secretariat can facilitate these activities.

 

4.  Education Sector HIV Coordinators will have identified three strategies for strengthening their in-country partnerships with the Caribbean Network of People Living with HIV and AIDS, and how the Education Sector HIV Coordinators Network Secretariat can facilitate these activities.

 

5.  Education Sector HIV Coordinators will continue to share information and experiences at meetings of the Education Sector HIV Coordinators Network.

 

6.  The Education Sector HIV Coordinators Network will establish three to six action priorities for the Secretariat to undertake on behalf of the Network over the next twelve months.

 

 

HIV Programme Coordinators

 

1.   HIV Programme Coordinators will have identified three strategies for strengthening their in-country partnerships with the Education Sector HIV Coordinator and the Caribbean Network of People Living with HIV and AIDS.

 

2.   Ministry of Health HIV Programme Coordinators will partner with the Education Sector HIV Coordinators to share evidence-based strategies and best practices regarding the evolution of the HIV Programme Coordinator role.

 

 Caribbean Network of People Living with AIDS (CRN+)

 

1.   CRN+ representatives will have identified three strategies for strengthening their in-country partnerships with the Education Sector HIV Coordinator and the Ministry of Health/NACC.

 

2.   CRN+ representatives will have renewed their commitment to assisting the education sector sensitize and educate staff, students, parents, and the community around issues of living with HIV and AIDS.
