Education Development Center (EDC) is a nonprofit organization that has, for almost 50 years, worked with partners around the globe to generate solutions to complex challenges in education, health, and justice. EDC’s overall funding level in 2001 - 2002 was nearly $80 million.
Health and Human Development Programs (HHD) is a division of EDC. Our mission is to foster healthy lifestyles and create healthy, safe environments where people live, learn, and work.
HHD works with partners around the world to promote healthy human development and reduce risk behaviors and disease. We specialize in identifying measures that are effective in various global settings, synthesizing and disseminating “best practices,” and building the capacity of agencies to apply these practices. We work with organizations at the international, regional, national, and local levels, providing expertise in:
- Infectious diseases, especially HIV/STD prevention
- Tobacco, alcohol, and other drug prevention
- Reproductive health
- Nutrition
- Mental health
- Violence and injury prevention
Our staff of more than 120 professionals have backgrounds in public health, mental health, social science, education, media, communications, and criminal justice. With a funding level of approximately $19 million and 62 active projects in 2005, HHD has grown at an average annual rate of 20 percent over the past decade. Governments, foundations, and corporations fund the work we carry out on their behalf.
