Establishment of a Network of HIV and AIDS Coordinators of Caribbean Ministries of Education
At the first meeting of the HIV and AIDS Coordinators of Caribbean Ministries of Education, held in Kingston, Jamaica April 25-28, 2006, the decision was taken to create a regional network.
Delegates from fourteen CARICOM countries attended. In addition, the British and Dutch Overseas Countries and Territories were jointly represented. There was consensus among delegates on the urgency of joint action to strengthen the contribution of the Caribbean’s education sector to the overall HIV and AIDS response.

Caribbean Ministries of Education, held in Kingston, Jamaica April 25-28, 2006.
The primary purpose of the network will be to promote the sharing of information and to find ways to build the capacity of national education sectors in creating effective policy and programme responses to HIV andAIDS in the region.
Participants agreed to the mission, vision, guiding principles, goal, objectives and structure of the network as well as some immediate areas for action.
At the conclusion of the three-day meeting an executive was elected to coordinate the activities of the network. The executive comprises seven members - Chair (Belize), Deputy Chair (Trinidad & Tobago), Secretary (St. Vincent & the Grenadines), Deputy Secretary (The Bahamas), Public Relations Officer (Jamaica) and two ex officio officers (Antigua & Barbuda, and the British and Dutch Overseas Countries and Territories).
The network will work alongside regional organisations - the CARICOM Secretariat, the Caribbean Coalition of National AIDS Programme Coordinators (CCNAPC), the Caribbean Regional Network of Seropositives (CRN+), the University of the West Indies (UWI), and the Caribbean Union of Teachers to do what to strengthen the regional response to HIV & AIDS.
The meeting was supported by UNESCO, the Education Development Centre, the University of the West Indies, the Partnership for Child Development, the Inter American Development Bank and the World Bank.
